Russia plans record $46.5 bln arms spending in 2009

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian spending on arms will rise to a record $46.5 billion next year, a senior government official said on Friday, as the Kremlin moves to beef up the armed forces after a conflict in Georgia.

Russian national defence orders will rise to 1.2 trillion roubles ($46.55 billion) in 2009, 70 billion roubles higher than previously planned, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov was shown saying on Russian television.

“We have managed to convince the Finance Ministry that the volume of state defence orders in 2009 will be 70 billion higher than previously planned,” Ivanov told Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

“The overall volume of state defence orders next year are planned at a record level of 1.2 trillion roubles,” Ivanov said.

Thailand Plans $191.3M Arms Purchase

BANGKOK - Thailand’s military, still standing watch over the kingdom’s political upheaval, has been cleared to purchase thousands of Israeli assault rifles and a Singaporean warship.

Embattled Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, who doubles as defense minister, approved a package of defense modernization deals with his Cabinet on Sept. 9. In total, the package is worth an estimated $191.3 million.

Most of the package is devoted to a $152.8 million Singapore Technologies-designed amphibious frigate. The Royal Thai Armed Forces will also buy thousands of Israeli assault rifles and Russian shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.

Pakistan to get 100 fighter jets from China, US

Pakistan will acquire over 100 fighter jets from China and the US as well as airborne warning and air-to-air refuelling aircraft to maintain numerical parity with the Indian Air Force which enjoys a “qualitative advantage”, the country’s air force chief has said.

Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed said the Pakistan Air Force was “very close” to signing a contract with China for serial production of 42 JF-17 fighter jets.

It would also acquire two squadrons or 36 of the FC-20 multi-role fighters from China and 18 new F-16s from the US, he said.

Ahmed said the PAF had already received eight JF-17 jets, which are being used for testing and evaluation. The first squadron of JF-17s is expected to be raised later this year or early next year.

JAKARTA, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - Indonesia will buy 20 Russian BMP-3F infantry fighting vehicles, the Russian ambassador to Jakarta has said.

Alexander Ivanov said representatives of the Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport and the Indonesian Defense Ministry signed a $40 mln contract on Monday for the delivery of a consignment of BMP-3F infantry fighting vehicles.
